Cupping Notes: Thick and Bright
A decadently sweet lemon pound cake with thick creamy fudge frosting. Notes of Bartlet pears poached in white wine and honey dance around the middle. A surprising flavor of bananas and twinkies with a hint of apple pie. Very thick and luscious mouthfeel. Amazingly both sweetly bright and wonderfully thick.
Preparation Recommends:
Bittersweet chocolate and soft lemony acidity as single origin espresso makes your face dance in joy. Exceptionally intense layered complexity shines in french press or pour over. Likes hotter water 203-205F.
The Edlyna microlot from FVH is one of our favorites each year. We have chosen it two years in a row as one of our top lots from the Martinez family. It is a fantastic amalgamation of flavors and aromas. Edlyna is a decisively feminine cup. She is a beautifully sweet example of a perfectly cultivated and processed highland Huehuetenango coffee with crisp lemon and floral notes dancing tightly with dark chocolate. Edlyna is a very structured and solid coffee. But it is also a complexly rich coffee that throws in some wildly savory saffron and herb notes combined with hints of super dark cherries. It is not a coffee for the weak willed or those who require complacency. But if you like your coffee to be like a globe trotting rich aunt who dispenses gifts from abroad and brings a smile every time she arrives then drink up and know delight.
Land description:
Edlyna borders Vista Hermosa and is somewhat similar in cup qualities as the terrain is identical. However there are less citrus and apple trees, and more bananas and plantains present. Since Edlyna faces a bit more towards the rising sun and the valley leading to the lowlands it receives more direct sun and drier winds. So it has a few more shade trees to lengthen the ripening process and protect the fruit. Edlyna contains the FVH sheep project which provides organic fertilizer for the farm. Some of the housing for seasonal workers is located on the same section as the sheep project. Edlyna also contains a virgin rainforest belt on the higher elevations that exceed 6200 ft. This coffee is consistently a very clean articulated cup that anyone can enjoy.
History:
Edlyna used to belong to Carmela Samayoa, a single mother who had inherited the land from her father who was a well known witch doctor. She sold simply because she wanted to move to the city. Edlyna was the name Edwin David Martinez would have been given had Edwin and Evelyn Martinez had a little girl. Because they never got to use that name they decided to name a section of their property Edlyna instead.
Awards and Certifications:
Edlyna made it to the semi final round in the Guatemala Cup Of Excellence 2008 but did not make it to the final 44 coffees. It is not purely classic Huehuetenango flavor profile. FVH has been awarded Cup of Excellence awards twice and Exceptional Cup Awards twice.
