Blueberries in the morning
08/20/09 - COFFEE
Do you all remember the sweet blueberries and cream which we love so much in the Ethiopian natural Sidamos? The flavors we have been so long without! well there back! Ethiopian Sidamo Amaro Gayo. Mmmmm. Nough said.
So here are the cupping notes: Aromas of blueberries and apricot. Low but pleasant and extremely sweet acidity reminiscent of ripe nectarines. Smooth viscous body with heavy cream in the finish. Great bounties of love and smoothness in your mouth.
Lovin it. Christian Rotsko

Bajawa, Flores
07/10/09 - COFFEE
**Bajawa Flores - Wongawali co-op**
Thick and Juicy
Flores (Portuguese for flowers”) is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands. The largest town is Maumere. Flores is located east of Sumbawa and Komodo and west of Lembata and the Alor Archipelago. To the southeast is Timor. To the south, across the Sumba strait, is Sumba and to the north, beyond the Flores Sea, is Sulawesi. Cities:
- Labuanbajo - launching point for Komodo Island and diving and snorkeling * Ende - lazy capital of the Island and departure point for ferries to West Timor * Maumere - diving/snorkeling center and easiest place to fly in and out of Flores * Riung - diving/snorkeling center * Moni - launching point for trek up Mount Kelimutu * Bajawa - is one of the best areas in Nusa Tenggara to see indigenous architecture in local ethnic minority villages * Ruteng - ethnic minority center interesting local villages There are many languages spoken on the island of Flores, all of them belonging to the Austronesian family. In the centre of the island in the districts of Ngada and Ende there is what is variously called the Central Flores Dialect Chain or the Central Flores Linkage. Within this area there are slight linguistic differences in almost every village. At least six separate languages are identifiable. These are from west to east: Ngadha, Nage, Keo, Ende, Lio and Palu’e, which is spoken on the island with the same name of the north coast of Flores. Locals would probably also add So’a and Bajawa to this list, which anthropologists have labeled dialects of Ngadha. Portuguese traders and missionaries came to Flores in the 16th century, mainly to Larantuka and Sikka. Their influence is still discernible in Sikka’s language and culture.
Country: Flores Farm/co-op: Wongawali Microlot: Bajawa Harvest year: 2009 Flavor type: Thick and Juicy
Flavor Notes: Heavy fruit juiciness welcomes you into a deep house trance of islandesque sweetness. Fresh ripe tropical fruits meld with hints of sweet savory thai basil and sweet red peppers. Wonderfully juicy and sweet with a very full face mouthfeel and just the right touch of rounded acidity. It’s heavy and sultry without being overdressed. Trust us, this is a tropical island treat of a coffee. Get your fruit groove on. Farm Overview: Flores is one of the big islands in the Lesser Sunda archipelago. The Bajawa ethnic group mainly inhabits the eastern part of the central highlands, in Ngada District, on the slopes of the Inerie volcano (2,245 m). Fertilizer inputs have almost never been applied by the farmers, other than organic manure and composting. Traditionally the farmers handpick only the mature (red) cherries. After picking the cherry is hand sorted to remove under-ripes.

07/10/09 - COFFEE
Tribal Aromas Papua New Guinea
Sweet and Creamy
This Papua-New Guinea is grown by the members of Tribal Aromas, a collective of small grower groups in the Chimbu Province, in the Eastern Highlands, a very remote region. The region is almost entirely roadless, and so remote that the coffee must be taken out by airplane, costing the farmers about fifty cents per pound. The coffee is cultivated on small clusters of plots, ranging from .5 to 1 hectare per farmer. Coffee is the only source of cash income for the growers as all other land is used to grow food crops for family consumption. All coffee is shade grown and certified by Australia Certified Organic, accredited by USDA and IFOAM.
Country: Papua New Guinea Farm/co-op: Tribal Aromas co-op Microlot: Tribal Aromas Harvest year: 2009 Flavor type: Sweet and Creamy
Flavor Notes: Banana cream pie! With whipped cream! Loaded with ultra sweet and creamy tropical and stone fruits. Papya, plaintain, peaches, cherimoya fruit salad. A round and sensual mouthfeel with liquid acidity and crystal clarity. Astoundingly juicy and clean. Awesome aromas of sweet fruit and flowers. Hints of raw sugar and caramelized pears in the finish. SWEET as LOVE. It’ll make you wanna get naked and dance around a fire.

Barefoot Coffee Roasters ~ El Salvador Aconcagua Cup of Excellence Pacamara
*Santa Clara, California
Reviewed: March 2009*Overall Rating:
91 points
*Aroma: 7
Acidity: 8
Body: 8
Flavor: 9
Aftertaste: 8
Roast (Agtron): Medium (55/66)*Origin: Ahuachapan Department, El Salvador.
Notes: A prize winner in the 2008 El Salvador Cup of Excellence competition, where as a green (unroasted) coffee it placed twelfth out of hundreds of entries, attracting a score of 86.5 from an international jury. Grower Tom Hawk produced this coffee entirely from trees of the Pacamara variety. Pacamara, a cross between the giant-beaned Maragogipe variety and Pacas, a selection of the heirloom Bourbon, has proven to produce exceptional coffee on many El Salvador farms. Barefoot Coffee Roasters is an award-winning and widely recognized small-batch roasting company that describes itself as “a happy little cafe and roastery in the heart of Silicon Valley.” Visit www.barefootcoffeeroasters.com for more information.
Blind Assessment: Improves as it moves along. The aroma is delicate, almost too delicate, with only slight hints of chocolate and flowers. Picks up energy in the cup: soft but vibrant acidity, silky mouthfeel. The dark chocolate and night flowers retain their delicacy but turn distinct and rich, carrying into a long, sweet-toned finish.
Who should drink it: Patient lovers of subtlety.
